EU bans import of deforestation-related products citing THE TERRITORY and the Uru-eu-wau-wau people

THE TERRITORY celebrates the decision by EU lawmakers who recently passed a resolution to ban the import of deforestation-related products into the continent. In September, Kuiambu addressed EU lawmakers in Brussels about the challenges his community faces from deforestation, just days before the resolution was passed. In the official pre-vote debate, four Members of EU Parliament spoke about THE TERRITORY and the situation facing the Uru-eu-wau-wau as a reason to support the resolution. Indigenous rights protections were also included in the final text of the law.

30 Nov: Kuiambu Uru-eu-wau-wau wrote in Al Jazeera:

To achieve justice this EU legislation should include a ban on products linked to violence against Indigenous people and displacement of Indigenous communities.
